Lenten Bible Study #9

THE PARABLE OF THE TENANTS

2ND Monday of Lent

Read Matthew 21:33-46.

What was the landowner’s original intension towards the tenants?  How was the landowner faithful to that original intension in spite of the actions of the tenants?

This parable is about the relationship between God and the House of Israel.  What does this parable tell you about this relationship?  Is this parable applicable to any situations today?  How is it applicable to your own life?

Notes on the text:

The vineyard was a common metaphor for the House of Israel.  See Isaiah 5:1-7.

In verse 34, the servants symbolize the prophets of Israel.  The produce symbolizes the good works required by the Law.

According to the inheritance laws, if a landowner died without an heir, his tenants inherited the land.
