Daily Scipture Meditation - March 31

Reflection, Monday March 31   Lauren Horstman Burdette

As I contemplated today’s readings, I was drawn to a quiet, hidden period in the gospel. The royal official asks Jesus twice to heal his son, and Jesus tells him to go, that his son shall live. The official believes him, and set out for home, alone. It’s that lonely walk that caught my attention, the time before his slaves reach him and tell him that yes, in fact his son has been healed. Can you imagine that journey? You’ve left home with the goal of having Jesus come to your house. In that sense, you’ve failed. But you have Jesus’s word that your son will live. As you walk by yourself, how do you feel? Do you believe Jesus? Are you full of hope? Does doubt creep in? Take a few minutes and imagine yourself making that walk, journeying through that time of not yet knowing.

In the royal official’s walk towards home, I see our own faith journeys. We’ve received a great promise, but we can’t see the outcome. Instead we journey towards home, with great bravery, hope and occasional doubt. “We walk by faith.”
