JESUS’ AUTHORITY IS
QUESTIONED
1ST
Thursday of Lent
Read Matthew 21:23-27
Jesus declined to answer the question about his authority
because he knew the questioners would refuse to listen to his answer. Sometimes answers are hard to hear. When have your answers not been heard? When have you refused to hear someone else’s
answers?
Notes on the text:
“These things” refers to the entry into Jerusalem and the
cleansing of the Temple.
Replying with a countering question was common in rabbinic
debates. Jesus taught in the classic
rabbinic style of his day.
By refusing to answer his question about John the Baptist, the
priests demonstrate their lack of authority to question Jesus.
