Ezekiel 18: 21-28
Matthew 5:20-26
The first reading from Ezekiel is a hard one. At
first glance one would think that it is better to start out wicked in one’s
life and then do some good at the end. All will be forgiven. But if you start
out “righteous and commit iniquity” you are lost. But Ezekiel entire 18th
chapter is about personal responsibility. In the beginning of the chapter,
which is not in this reading, Ezekiel takes to task a popular proverb of the
time that implies children are destined to bear the burden of their parents’
actions. Furthermore, parents were then responsible for the sins of their
children. Instead we are called to a more mature faith, where we are
responsible for our own actions: we cannot blame God or others for our choices.
Jesus brings in the practical application to the law
as he typically does, while continuing the theme of personal responsibility. We
are familiar with the 23rd verse that calls us to be reconciled with
our brother or sister before we offer gifts at the altar. Wow, how many times
have we come to Mass or private prayer with anger in our heart? Is there anyone
this Lent for whom I need to be reconciled?
