Jeremiah
17:5-10
Luke
16:19-31
“And lying at his door was a poor man
names Lazarus….”
Like the
nameless rich man in this parable, all of us have those less fortunate in our
midst, if not at our door. And the rich
man is punished not so much for his sin, but for his arrogance and utter
blindness to the plight of this poor man Lazarus whom he passed every day
without even noticing. All our lives are
also touched by those in need of our help.
This gospel reminds us that we are called to be sensitive and aware of
the needs of others and to respond with care and help as best we can. Perhaps Jesus did not name this rich man so
that we could easily substitute our own names for the rich man as we read this
story.
